Lewes Bonfire Night
One of the most important annual events in the UK is Lewes Bonfire Festival, featuring a variety of controversial figures paraded through the streets and burnt on one of the five bonfires they have at the event.
The event is organised by the local bonfire societies under Lewes Bonfire Council and each proceed along their own route accompanied by a number of other societies in the area. With each of the figures causing heated discussion over some years it is a spectacle to be marveled at by event-goers.
During the event burning crosses are carried through the town marking the demise of the seventeen martyrs as well as flaming tar barrels symbolizing ‘the throwing of the magistrates in the river’. Over 80,000 people have come in past years so be aware it is very crowded.
